What every Orthodontist doesn't want you to know!

95% of the damage that is caused by thumbsucking starts between the ages of 3 and 4 when the permanent teeth start to arrive. If you can break your childs thumb sucking habit before age 4; their will be minimal or no interruption of the alignment of your child's permanent teeth due to thumbsucking. When the permanent teeth start to arrive during their thumb sucking habit; the upper front teeth are pushed out, the lower front teeth are pushed in and the side teeth are drawn in. The strength of your teeth is how tightly they are wedged together. When that wedge has been interrupted by thumbsucking; the jaw will actually start to shrink in order to re-wedge the disturbed teeth back together. This is why some children need to have 2 or more upper and lower teeth pulled during realignment by an orthodontist so that the remaining teeth can fit in that smaller space.
